Seasonal Worker Program
The Seasonal Worker Program mission is to provide activities and support for seasonal workers in York, Maine, designed to enhance their work and personal experiences in our community. The program includes a bicycle loan program, social events and building relationships with the community through our Local Contacts and Business Ambassador programs. The Seasonal Worker Program is a committee of the York Diversity Forum, a volunteer non-profit organization.
Overview
York Diversity Forum's Seasonal Worker Program began in 2004 in response to the Seasonal Workers’ need for local transportation. Volunteers started lending bicycles to Seasonal Workers so they could get to work and around town. The Program grew as Seasonal Workers and Diversity Forum volunteers found ways to enrich their experience.
- Some 40+ students come to York each summer.
- The majority of Seasonal Workers are international college students in their early 20s who come to York from all over the world. They work in local restaurants, motels and hotels.
- The students begin arriving the first week of June and stay until mid-September. Their Work and Travel Visas allow them to work for three months and travel for one month. Some students work the full time rather than travel the last month.
- Students come to the US through a Sponsoring Agency whose primary function is to find them jobs and housing.
