Local Contacts Program

Seasonal Workers have said that the experience with their Local Contact is one of the most meaningful parts of the program and Local Contact volunteers have reported that they got more out of the program than they gave.

Over the years it became apparent that Seasonal Workers would benefit from a connection to people in the York community. For that reason the "Local Contacts" program was started. The role of the Local Contact is to provide occasional transportation, a home cooked meal, assistance with shopping and an occasional trip to Portsmouth. Local Contacts also make themselves available for questions or concerns that the Seasonal worker might have.

Seasonal Workers have said that the experience with their Local Contact is one of the most meaningful parts of the program and Local Contact volunteers have reported that they got more out of the program than they gave. Participation in the Local Contact program is a wonderful way to learn about other cultures and share your own culture with others.

Local Contact Roles and Responsibilities

• Be paired with one or more Seasonal Workers.
• Invite Seasonal Worker over for an occasional meal. Meals can include just the assigned Seasonal Worker or another Seasonal Worker and their Local Contact. In the past Students have enjoyed cooking a meal from their country, in which case, The Local Contact could offer to buy the ingredients and provide a place to cook the meal.
• Take assigned Seasonal Worker grocery shopping – locally.
• Inform Seasonal Worker of the Table of Plenty (TOP) free meals every Tuesday night at the First Parish Church in York. If your Seasonal Worker is interested in attending, consider accompanying them the first time.
• Be available to respond to any practical questions or concerns that come up (i.e., lodging, communication, banking, health, personal safety, etc.) Note: Issues with work environments and housing are handled by the Sponsoring Agency.
• Take your assigned Seasonal Worker on a shopping trip at the end of the summer.
• Show assigned Seasonal Worker cultural or tourist sites depending on their interest and your willingness to do so (this is at your discretion). Such outings might include museums, parks, nature preserves, baseball games, etc.
